What are the advantages of copper-core cables over aluminum-core cables?

2021.10.22

1. Low resistivity: The resistivity of aluminum-core cables is about 1.68 times higher than that of copper-core cables.

2. Good ductility: the ductility of copper alloy is 20~40%, the ductility of copper for electrical use is more than 30%, while aluminum alloy is only 18%.

3. High strength: the permissible stress at room temperature, copper than aluminum were 7 ~ 28% higher. Especially at high temperatures, the difference between the two stresses is very far.

4. Fatigue resistance: Aluminum is easy to break by repeated bending, but copper is not easy. In terms of elasticity index, copper is also about 1.7~1.8 times higher than aluminum.

5. Good stability and corrosion resistance: copper core is oxidation and corrosion resistant, while aluminum core is susceptible to oxidation and corrosion.

6. Large current-carrying capacity: Due to the low resistivity, copper-core cables with the same cross-section have a higher permissible current-carrying capacity (the maximum current that can be passed) than aluminum-core cables by about 30%.

7. Low voltage loss: Due to the low resistivity of copper core cables, the same current flows through the same cross section. The voltage drop of copper core cable is small. The same transmission distance, can ensure higher voltage quality; in the allowable voltage drop conditions, copper core cable transmission can reach a longer distance, that is, the power supply covers a large area, which is conducive to the planning of the network, reducing the number of power supply points set up.

8. Lower heat generation temperature: Under the same current, the heat generation of copper core cables with the same cross-section is much smaller than that of aluminum core cables, which makes the operation safer.

9. Low energy consumption: Due to the low electrical resistivity of copper, it is obvious that copper cables have low power losses compared to aluminum cables. This contributes to increased utilization of power generation and protection of the environment.

10. Antioxidant and corrosion resistant: The connectors of copper core cables are stable and will not cause accidents due to oxidation. Aluminum-core cables have unstable connectors, and accidents often occur due to oxidation, which increases contact resistance and heat generation. Therefore, the accident rate is much larger than that of copper core cable.

11. Convenient construction:

Copper core flexibility is good, the permissible bending radius is small, so it is convenient to bend and easy to thread the pipe;

Copper core is anti-fatigue, not easy to break by repeated bending, so it is easy to connect the wires;

In the copper core of high mechanical strength, can withstand greater mechanical tension, to the construction of the laying of a great convenience, but also for the mechanization of construction has created the conditions.
